Finland's newly elected president Alexander Stubb says his country has entered into a "new era' following Finland's Nato membership.
Alexander Stubb was sworn in Friday, Mar 1st as Finland's new president and said that the Nordic country "is facing a new era" after becoming a Nato member.
Cai-Göran Alexander Stubb born 1 April 1968 is the 13th and current President of Finland, having won the 2024 presidential election. He once served as Prime Minister of Finland from 2014 to 2015.
Stubb started his career in politics as a researcher specializing in the affairs of the European Union, in 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the National Coalition Party (a political party in Finland).
Continuing his successful career as a politician, Stubb was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2008.
In 2011, he was elected to the Finnish Parliament for the first time as an MP with the second-highest vote count in the election. He was then appointed Minister for European Affairs and Trade in the Cabinet of Jyrki Katainen.
His rise continued on a smooth ride in 2014 When Katainen stepped down as Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Coalition Party,
Stubb was elected as party chairman. He then created a five-party government coalition and was officially appointed Prime Minister by President Sauli Niinistö on 24 June 2014.
2023 being the most prolific year and the beginning of a new journey for Alexander Stubb, the Finland-Swedish announced his decision to run in the 2024 Finnish presidential election.
He achieved great success finishing first in the first round of voting on 28 January and won the run-off on 11 February, winning 51.6% of the votes against Pekka Haavisto. Stubb is the second Finland-Swedish president in the history of Finland after C. G. E. Mannerheim.
Stubb will commence operation as Finland has become a Nato member by making his first foreign trip to inspect the military alliance's drill in neighboring Norway's Arctic region.
The 12-day NATO exercise is called Nordic Response and begins on Sunday. Stubb said that he would go for one day, on March 7.
“If someone had told me two years ago that the president of Finland would make his first working visit to NATO exercises a week after his inauguration, I wouldn't have believed it,” Stubb spoke at a news conference in the seaside Presidential Palace in Helsinki (Stubb's hometown).
