House Democrats Propose Renaming Miami Federal Prison in Honor of Donald J. Trump

Washington, D.C. — In a move that adds a twist to the ongoing political saga, a group of House Democrats has introduced legislation to rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution in Florida after former President Donald J. Trump.

The bill, unveiled on Friday, aims to bestow upon Trump an honor that, according to its sponsors, he truly deserves.

The proposal comes as a response to a recent Republican bill that sought to rename Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia after the former president.

While the Republican bill aimed to immortalize Trump’s name in the skies, the Democratic lawmakers decided to take a different route: renaming a federal prison.

The two-page bill, co-sponsored by Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-Virginia), Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida), and John Garamendi (D-California), designates the Miami Federal Correctional Institution as the "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution."

The move is symbolic, reflecting the ongoing legal battles Trump faces.

Trump currently faces multiple federal criminal charges in Florida, including allegations of mishandling sensitive government information, false statements, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and more.

While he has pleaded not guilty to all charges, the legal proceedings continue.

Additionally, Trump is also dealing with state criminal charges in New York related to falsifying business records and hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.

Rep. John Garamendi expressed his perspective on the matter:

“I cannot think of a more fitting tribute to our former president, Donald J. Trump, than renaming the closest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago in his honor.” Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club in Florida, has been a central location in his life and presidency.

Despite the symbolic intent, the bill is unlikely to pass. However, it serves as a pointed commentary on the legal challenges faced by the former president and the ongoing political divisions surrounding his legacy.

In response to the Republican airport renaming proposal, Rep. Gerry Connolly quipped,

"When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said the more fitting option would be to rename a federal prison. I hope our Republican friends will join us in bestowing upon Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves."
