Trump Rallies Support for Johnson at Mar-a-Lago Amid Leadership Tensions
ABC News

Former President Donald Trump is set to make a joint appearance with House Speaker Mike Johnson at the Mar-a-Lago estate.

This high-profile event comes as Johnson faces a significant threat to his speakership, primarily from GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

Trump’s endorsement is seen as a crucial lifeline for Johnson, who has been grappling with internal party dissent over his leadership style and policy decisions.

The former president’s support could sway the party’s conservative base, which remains influential in the House.

The challenge to Johnson’s position gained momentum after Greene introduced a resolution to force a vote of no confidence in the speaker. The resolution criticized Johnson for his approach to spending bills and his handling of legislation, including the contentious reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Despite their alliance, Trump and Johnson have not always seen eye-to-eye, particularly on the issue of additional aid to Ukraine. Trump has been vocal about his opposition to further funding, while Johnson has navigated a more complex stance within the House.

The joint appearance at Mar-a-Lago is expected to address these differences and present a united front. It has been billed as a “major announcement on election integrity,” hinting at legislative efforts to prevent noncitizens from voting.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump praised Johnson’s leadership, stating, “Mike has been a strong leader for our party, and I am confident he will continue to be so in the future.”

Johnson echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for Trump’s backing: “President Trump’s support is invaluable as we work together to address the challenges facing our nation,” he said.
